Best Beaches for Beginner Surfing
Chesterman Beach
The closest beach to Nootka Tofino — just a 2-minute walk — Chesterman is a long, south-facing beach that catches a wide range of swells. The northern end tends to be gentler and is perfect for first-timers. The beach is split by Frank Island, a small tidal island connected to the main beach at low tide, creating two distinct surf zones.
Cox Bay Beach
About 5 minutes south of Chesterman by car, Cox Bay is a slightly more exposed beach that produces more powerful, hollow waves. It's beloved by intermediate and advanced surfers, and is where many surf competitions are held. Can work for beginners on smaller days.
Long Beach
Within Pacific Rim National Park Reserve, Long Beach stretches over 16 km and offers the most consistent swells in the area. Multiple access points offer different wave characteristics — and its sheer length means you'll always find a spot, even in peak summer.

- Listen carefully during beach instruction — the fundamentals matter more than you think
- Don't be discouraged if you don't stand up on day one — most beginners do, but falling is part of learning
- Surf with the school's group, not with experienced surfers at the peak
- Stay hydrated — you'll be working harder than you expect
