What to pack for Tofino BC — whether you're visiting in summer, fall, winter, or spring. Gear for surfing, hiking, rain, and relaxing at the property.
Packing for Tofino: The Essentials
Tofino rewards good preparation. The weather is famously changeable — sunny and warm one hour, sideways rain the next. Activities span surfing the Pacific, hiking old-growth rainforest, and unwinding in a cedar sauna. Get the packing right and you'll be comfortable and ready for everything.

Year-Round Essentials (Every Season)
- Waterproof rain jacket — The single most important item. Choose a proper waterproof shell, not a fashion jacket. Tofino gets serious rain, especially outside summer.
- Waterproof footwear — Rubber boots for heavy rain, or waterproof trail shoes. Your feet will get wet without them.
- Swimsuit — Essential for the hot tub and sauna at Nootka Tofino, and for brave ocean dips.
- Layers — The coast has significant temperature swings. Base layer + fleece + waterproof outer shell covers most situations.
- Sunscreen — Even on overcast days, UV at the beach is stronger than you expect.
- Reusable water bottle — Tofino's tap water is excellent. Stay hydrated on trails and beach days.
Summer Packing List (June–September)
- Light layers — evenings cool down significantly even in July and August
- Sun hat and sunglasses
- Sandals or flip-flops for beach walks
- Light rain jacket (summer showers are common)
- Beach towel — Nootka Tofino provides towels but a dedicated beach towel is handy
- Bug spray for forest trails

Fall & Spring Packing List
- Mid-weight fleece or wool sweater
- 4/3mm wetsuit if surfing (or rent locally — saves the hassle)
- Waterproof hiking boots with good grip
- Warm hat and gloves for evening beach walks
- Camera — fall and spring have the most dramatic, moody light in Tofino
Winter Packing List
- Heavy waterproof jacket — non-negotiable
- Warm insulated layers: down jacket or heavy fleece
- 5/4mm wetsuit + boots + gloves + hood if surfing
- Waterproof pants for serious storm-watching days
- Warm beanie and neck gaiter
- Headlamp — winter days are short and evenings come fast
- A good book for watching storms from inside

Surfing Gear
Everything for surfing can be rented right in Tofino — boards, wetsuits, boots, gloves, and hoods. If you own a wetsuit appropriate for the season, bring it. Otherwise, rent locally and save the hassle of travelling with gear. Board rentals run approximately $30–50/day.
What NOT to Bring
- Formal attire — Tofino is casual. Even Wolf in the Fog (Michelin star) is relaxed in dress code.
- Too much clothing — You'll be in outdoor gear most of the time. Pack lighter than you think you need to.
- Anything you're afraid to get sandy or wet — Tofino is a beach town. Embrace it.
