Chesterman Beach in Tofino is one of Canada's most beautiful stretches of sand. Here's everything you need to know about surfing, walking, tides, and visiting.
Chesterman Beach: Tofino's Favourite Local Beach
While Long Beach in Pacific Rim National Park gets much of the tourist attention, Chesterman Beach is where Tofino locals and in-the-know visitors prefer to spend their time. Quieter, more intimate, and arguably more beautiful — Chesterman is a 2 km arc of wide, golden sand flanked by old-growth forest and rocky headlands, with Frank Island sitting dramatically at its midpoint.

Getting There
Chesterman Beach is located approximately 3 km south of downtown Tofino along Lynn Road. Staying at Nootka Tofino at 1238 Lynn Rd puts you just a 2-minute walk from the North Chesterman beach access — one of the great perks of the property. There is parking at both the north and south ends of the beach.
Frank Island
One of Chesterman's most magical features is Frank Island — a small forested island that becomes accessible by foot at low tide. Walking across the sandbar and watching the tide slowly return is a quintessential Tofino experience. Check tide tables before you go so you don't get stranded — the tide comes in fast. The foreshore is publicly accessible.
Surfing at Chesterman
Chesterman produces consistent beach breaks popular with surfers of all levels. The north end tends to have gentler, beginner-friendly waves. The south end near Frank Island produces faster, more powerful surf on bigger swells. The beach faces southwest and picks up both south and northwest Pacific swells.
Surf rental shops and surf schools operate from the beach access points. Nootka Tofino guests can walk to the beach with boards in minutes — a genuine advantage.

Swimming & Safety
The Pacific Ocean off Chesterman is cold year-round (8–14°C). Swimming without a wetsuit is possible in summer but not comfortable for long. The beach has rip currents and powerful shore break — always check conditions before entering and supervise children closely. The beach is not lifeguarded.
Best Times to Visit
- Sunrise: Walk the beach before the surf crowd arrives — often completely empty and utterly magical
- Low tide: Best time to walk to Frank Island and explore the tidal pools
- Sunset: The west-facing beach offers spectacular Pacific sunsets — some of the best in all of BC
- Winter storms: Dramatic and wild — stay well back from the waterline during big surf
